The sea dragged a pick-up truck off the front at Sidmouth and Ottery St Mary’s iconic tar barrel bonfire is under feet of floodwater after Storm Ciaran raged across East Devon. A road closure lasting more than three weeks has been announced for an East Devon village during the final phase of work to upgrade gas pipes. Wales & West Utilities said the final phase of gas pipe upgrade in the Burnt Oak area of Sidbury, East Devon, is set to start on Monday, October 2, and will finish by the end of the month. Heavy rain prompts flood alerts for parts of East Devon, while the county council reveals the clear-up is likely to take ‘several days’

Torrential downpours on Sunday (September 17) resulted in a month of rainfall in one day – battering parts of East Devon and Exeter and prompting flood alerts to be issued by the Environment Agency (EA). Devon County Council (DCC) said the clear-up from Sunday’s floods was ‘likely to take several days’. A deluge of rain in areas of Devon on Sunday afternoon resulted in many rivers breaching their banks and floodwater settling on roads and farmland. All-day parking for £2 in district council car parks begins next week across East Devon – in a bid to encourage shoppers to spend locally. Motorists are being warned that a main route through an East Devon village could be closed to traffic for five days for ‘essential’ gas pipe upgrade work. Wales & West Utilities will on October 17 start a £100,000 upgrade to the gas network in the Burnt Oak area of Sidbury, East Devon, which is expected to last more than a month.
