Firefighters from East Devon on Wednesday (September 7) tackled a blaze in a garage in Colyton after an electric car charging point caught fire. Crews from Colyton, Seaton and Lyme Regis, in Dorset, were called to the property where they found fire had spread to the garage from a car charger. The crews ‘quickly’ brought the blaze under control and stopped it spreading to neighbouring properties. Firefighters praised residents at the property for having smoke detectors which raised the alarm. Water from a fish pond was used by fire crews to help tackle a recent motorhome blaze on a remote campsite in East Devon. Firefighters from East Devon were at the end of August called to a campsite in Kilmington after a member of the public reported a motorhome on fire. Because of the remote location, crews used a portable pump to take water from an on-site carp pond to help douse the flames. The vehicle, which contained lithium batteries and a half-full gas canister, was destroyed by the fire. The cause of the blaze was thought to be accidental.…

An off-duty firefighter was first on scene in a bid to stop a blaze escalating when rooftop decking caught fire in Seaton in the early hours of Tuesday morning (May 30). Firefighters from Seaton, Colyton, Axminster, plus and the aerial ladder platform Danes Castle, in Exeter, were called to the property at around 3.30am after a member of the public reported the roof of a property was on fire. An East Devon care home told to improve by government inspectors has drafted in a new manager in a bid to raise standards. Elmwood Residential Home, in Colyford, Colyton, was inspected by regulator Care Quality Commission (CQC) in December 2022, where it was found the service required improvement, after monitoring the care home’s safety standards and leadership. Work to upgrade gas pipes in an East Devon town has finished weeks ahead of the spring deadline. Wales & West Utilities announced this week it has completed work to upgrade gas pipes in Colyton ahead of the planned six-month schedule. The ‘essential’ upgrade work in the East Devon town – due to finish at the end of March -began in September and was completed by the start of February. A series of road closures spanning several months has been announced for the East Devon town of Colyton as work continues to upgrade the town’s gas pipes. Wales & West Utilities said it was ‘progressing well’ with its work to upgrade gas pipes in the King Street area of Colyton, which started in September. A memory café in East Devon is celebrating a windfall from the county council to pay for extra transport so more people can attend its sessions. The Colyton and Colyford Memory Café has been awarded a grant from Devon County Council’s Connecting You fund, for use providing door-to-door transport for those keen to attend the monthly event. The East Devon memory café team said the windfall will enable people to attend who would otherwise stay away because of transport cost concerns. Towns across East Devon have joined forces with MP Simon Jupp in calling for the district council to fully reopen its tax-payer-funded headquarters to the public.
