An ‘aggressive’ gang of youths who vandalised a Sidmouth beauty spot has resulted in police slapping New Year’s Eve sanctions and arrest powers on the town. Police said around 100 loud youths drinking alcohol and acting aggressively in Connaught Gardens on Tuesday night (December 30) caused criminal damage. Greenhouses in Connaught Gardens were targeted by vandals who smashed glass windows protecting the succulents and plants. One visitor to the gardens said several large rocks had been thrown through the windows of the cactus house, ‘lots’ of bins in the gardens were damaged and beer cans were ‘everywhere’. A reclusive East Devon pensioner who bludgeoned his sister to death in her bed will remain locked in a secure hospital. Richard Law, aged 68, of Lark Rise, Newton Poppleford, in East Devon, admitted hitting 70-year-old sister Judith six times with a hammer because he ‘could not cope’ with their anxiety and depression, and ‘wanted it to end’. Numbers of East Devon voters turning out to the ballot boxes amid the county elections has fallen while postal votes increased, it has been revealed. Voter turnout at the ballot box is down in the biggest district of Devon’s county-wide elections, writes local democracy reporter Bradley Gerrard. Teenager dies and two others are injured after an early-hours crash in East Devon

A teenager died and two others were injured in the early hours of Tuesday morning (April 29) after a crash near an East Devon village. A seriously injured 18-year-old man from Holsworthy was pronounced dead at the scene by medics. An 18-year-old man from the Wadebridge area, in Cornwall, who was injured in the crash, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving through alcohol. Gas pipe upgrade prompts weeks of road closures, temporary traffic lights and parking bans for Sidmouth

Weeks of road closures, temporary traffic lights and parking bans are set to start in Sidmouth next week, until September, while gas pipes are upgraded. Wales & West Utilities has announced it will start a £336,000 upgrade on Tuesday, April 22, closing the road along Manstone Lane until mid-May, and setting up temporary traffic lights at a nearby junction until August. Other restrictions include a parking ban lasting around a month, from June until mid-July for a residential area of town, and a further road closure.
