Teenager dies and two others are injured after an early-hours crash in East Devon

A teenager died and two others were injured in the early hours of Tuesday morning (April 29) after a crash near an East Devon village.

A seriously injured 18-year-old man from Holsworthy was pronounced dead at the scene by medics.

An 18-year-old man from the Wadebridge area, in Cornwall, who was injured in the crash, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving through alcohol.

A second injured teenager, also aged 18, from the Bodmin area of Cornwall, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He was de-arrested while he remains in hospital.

Police investigating the crash are calling for witnesses or drivers with dashcam footage to get in touch.

The emergency services were called to Pinn Lane, near Otterton, East Devon, after a car crashed at around 2.15am.

An 18-year-old, who was seriously injured, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics and his next of kin informed.

Police said two other teenagers were injured in the crash and needed hospital treatment. One was well enough to go home. The other remains in hospital.

A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesperson said: “We are investigating a fatal road traffic collision near Otterton on Tuesday 29 April and are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

“Officers were called to reports of a single-vehicle road traffic collision involving a car on Pinn Lane, near Otterton, at around 2.15am on Tuesday 29 April.

“Emergency services attended the scene.

“An 18-year-old man from the Holsworthy area sustained serious injuries. Despite the efforts of paramedics, he was pronounced deceased at the scene. His next of kin have been informed.

“Two other men were injured in the collision, with both requiring hospital treatment. One was discharged later, the other remains in hospital.

“Local road closures were put in place while officers from the Roads Policing Team carried out an examination of the scene. The road closure was handed over to highways at around 1.30pm.”

The spokesperson added: “An 18-year-old man from the Wadebridge area was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and on suspicion of driving whilst unfit through drink. He has been released on bail, pending further enquiries.

“A second man, aged 18 from the Bodmin area, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He has been de-arrested, while he remains in hospital.”
