East Devon residents looking to get rid of their real Christmas trees can take them to be ‘recycled’ at a host of drop-off points across the district. The now-forlorn festive items can be left at designated sites in Axminster, Broadclyst, Budleigh Salterton, Cranbrook, Exmouth, Honiton, Ottery St Mary, Seaton and Sidmouth. Seaton Hospital is set to be saved and turned into a ‘health hub’ for the community. The hospital saw its inpatient wards closed in 2017 and currently only 35 per cent of the building is being occupied – a situation that is ‘not tenable financially’. Sidmouth’s Boxing Day Swim has been cancelled due to the wild weather – with a festive dip in Seaton also called off. The December 26 tradition had been set to take place at 11am, but organisers announced this morning that it could not go ahead over safety fears. Children in East Devon are borrowing and reading more books from their local libraries, figures have revealed.  The number of youngsters loaning literature from hubs in Exmouth, Sidmouth, Honiton, Seaton, Ottery St Mary and Budleigh Salterton was on the rise between July and September. And more kids in the towns have taken part in the Summer Reading Challenge. Axminster and Colyton were the only places where there was a year-on-year decline in the numbers. Neighbours in Seaton are celebrating after winning a £1,000 lottery cash prize – thanks to their lucky postcode. Two Seaton Down Hill residents scooped the windfall when EX12 2TH was announced as a Daily Prize winner in the People’s Postcode Lottery today (November 12). The former Carpetright shop in Marine Place, Seaton, is to be transformed into a community hub by a care provider. Overington Care has been granted permission to change the use of the vacant shop unit to mixed use, including a day centre and café. Police have today issued an alert, saying officers have received a report of two males looking in people’s gardens in Seaton. Residents are urged not to let cold callers remove waste from their premises and to call police if they see anyone acting suspiciously. The men have been seen in a white Ford Transit van. It is understood they could be looking for scrap metal. Unopened alcohol seized by police from youngsters at carnivals in Sidmouth, Seaton and Colyton is to be raffled off. The cash will benefit six local charities.
