Police have vowed to crack down on motorists who defy the new speed limit on a busy East Devon road. Officers have been carrying out checks on Seaton Down Hill and say they will ramp up their enforcement of the freshly-designated 40mph zone during October. Sergeant Andy Squires, Seaton neighbourhood policing team leader, said speed checks at varying times of day were carried out in September. Speeding is a major contributory factor in serious and fatal road traffic collisions, particularly in East Devon, and we are grateful to the Community Speedwatch volunteers for their contribution in trying to keep our…

Seaton is to trial year-long free parking for coaches in a bid to boost tourism. East Devon District Council (EDDC) yesterday (Wednesday) agreed to offer free coach parking for a 12-month trial in the Seaton Jurassic car park. EDDC’s cabinet heard how the Seaton ward member formally requested the authority’s help in branding Seaton as a coach-friendly town. Arguments for free daily coach parking included a beyond-repair pay-and-display ticket machine in the coach park and coach parking revenue during June and July falling below £100. The free trial aims to gauge if the offer results in increased coach visits to…

Councillors raged for nearly two hours at proposals to hike car parking charges and introduce tariffs for the first time at East Devon’s free car parks. Proposals that went before East Devon District Council’s cabinet on Wednesday night would have seen eight car parks have parking charges imposed for the first time, a 50 per cent increase on tariffs in 12 car parks, and night charges introduced in 12 car parks. In total, a record breaking 24 councillors spoke to slam the plans. After nearly two hours of debate, the cabinet agreed to put forward plans for consultation that would see…

They are joining the Totally Locally initiative, which is already encouraging shoppers back into town centres at over 40 other high streets across the country. The Fiver Fest will run from October 5 to 12. It will see small businesses offer a wide range of £5 deals. Shops, cafés, restaurants, pubs, and other businesses are taking part to showcase what independent traders in Seaton have to offer. Posters are now going up around the town, promoting all of the Fiver Fest offers…

Driving forces behind plans to bring electric vehicle charging points to East Devon’s public car parks are ‘mystified’ the move is being used to justify controversial price hikes.  The district council is proposing a 50 per cent increase at its busiest sites – and making free facilities pay-and-display – to net an extra £400,000 a year. Among reasons for the move, officers say ‘significant investment’ is needed to cater for more environmentally-friendly motors. The unintended consequence of further threatening the high street…and hitting people’s pockets so hard…is an excessively blunt tool for influencing people’s travel behaviour…EDDC could have to fork…

Independent businesses in Seaton are encouraging local shoppers to come back into the town centre for the national Totally Locally Fiver Fest.  They have signed up the economy-boosting initiative to show off all the positive things that their town centre has to offer. We’re joining in with the Totally Locally Fiver Fest to introduce some great bargains for local shoppers, but also to showcase the town and the great shops and businesses we have here, and show how important independent High Streets are to our communities and towns – Marc Smith More than 40 other towns across the country will…

Seaton’s busiest car park is facing a 50 per cent price hike – while charges at another site could be scrapped to make it a ‘coach-friendly town’. East Devon District Council (EDDC) is considering both moves among sweeping changes to its tariffs. A year-long trial of free parking for coaches at Seaton Jurassic is being proposed in a bid to boost tourism. The authority is also planning to increase the hourly rate at the Orchard car park from £1 to £1.50. An evening and overnight levy would also be introduced as the facility. During June and July, our coach parking…

Police are appealing for witnesses following a spate of late night burglaries in Seaton.  They are hunting a white male aged between 40 and 60. In two of the three reported incidents, the intruder was disturbed. In all cases, the burglar is thought to have left empty-handed. Devon and Cornwall Police say a property in Townsend Road was entered between 11pm on Saturday, September 14 and 1am on Sunday, September 15. The suspect was disturbed and left. Nothing has been reported stolen from the address. A second property, in Seaton Down Road, was entered at approximately 12.30am on Sunday, September…

East Devon’s free car parks will become pay-and-display and charges at busy spots will rocket by 50 per cent under changes proposed by the district council. The authority could raise an extra £400,000 a year by hiking costs at its most popular facilities and targeting those where motorists can currently stop off for nothing. Evening and overnight stay levies will also be imposed at sites where there is presently no cost for drivers at these times. We are under increasing pressure to review our activities and move to a position where we are managing all of our car parking assets…

An East Devon health centre hit by ‘astronomical’ rent rises has been left without hot water since June and is being billed for services that don’t exist, a watchdog has been told.  A report has also revealed concern that basic fire checks aren’t being carried out at Colyton Health Centre, in Grove Hill, and its bosses fear having to search for a new premises. Seaton and Colyton Medical Practice has been fighting a long-running battle over rapidly rising costs since NHS Property Services took over as landlord three years ago. Its rent has rocketed from £5,500 to £40,000 a year…
