A farm manager has appeared in court and slapped with a fine for his ‘reckless attitude’, which led to polluting an East Devon river with a thick blanket of sewage fungus. A Devon farm partnership has been fined almost £16,000 after slurry discharges from two different sites polluted the River Yarty last May, writes Isabelle Pinnock, OPCC court reporting scheme. Firefighters from Axminster and Colyton were called to Burnsfield Road, Colyton, to find the blaze was in danger of spreading to nearby homes and property. The fire crews used hose reel jets to tackle the vehicle blaze and another on the property to stop the fire from spreading any further. Storm water spills have been slashed for an East Devon village after South West Water (SWW) recently upgraded almost a mile of sewers. The water giant said last year it cut storm overflow spills in the Uplyme area of East Devon by 20 per cent compared to 2024 after its engineers stopped a domino effect of groundwater infiltration overwhelming pipes and manholes, that sent wastewater spilling into the river. The 700-metres of sewer upgrade included relining pipes and sealing manholes. Buses will replace trains for some East Devon rail passengers over the Easter weekend when engineers replace a section of track that runs through Seaton Junction, to the west of Axminster. The trustees of the Flamingo Community Pool said the move was prompted by spiralling running costs, resulting in higher outgoings than income.
