Sand-tastic achievement for East Devon beaches scooping Blue Flag and Seaside awards

East Devon is celebrating a sand-tastic achievement after four beaches scooped Blue Flag and Seaside Awards. Exmouth and Sidmouth beaches both won Blue Flag and Seaside awards, while Seaside awards went to Budleigh Salterton and Jacob’s Ladder. Budleigh Salterton failed to scoop a 2026 Blue Flag award because of a fall in water quality. And beaches at Seaton and Beer were left empty-handed amid a lack of lifeguard provision. The district council said it would support the highest possible standards across East Devon’s beaches. Prolific Exmouth shoplifter who pocketed a pensioner’s savings and cafe tip jar is jailed and banned from the town

A prolific Exmouth shoplifter has been jailed and banned from the town for three years after clocking up multiple crimes, including pocketing a vulnerable pensioner’s savings and pinching a tip jar from a café after he was gifted a free breakfast. Cyril David, pictured here, was charged with theft, fraud and multiple shoplifting offences. He was jailed for 46 weeks and slapped with a Criminal Behaviour Order, banning him from entering Exmouth for the next three years. Police said in September 2025 David stole a bank card from a vulnerable 71-year-old man, pocketing and spending £1,400 of the pensioner’s savings.…

A pair of abandoned and starving piglets rescued by the RSCPA on Friday the 13th have turned around their unlucky start after being rehomed in East Devon. The three-month-old sisters, named Emma and Ellie, were found starving and heard crying out for help along a driveway in Glastonbury, and after a after a month of being cared for by the RSCPA  have officially moved to their permanent new home at Bicton Agricultural College. District planners will next week decide if new homes can be built in two towns and a village in East Devon, amid scores of objections from residents. Police appeal for information after woman dies in car crash near Budleigh Salterton

A woman has died after a car crashed in field near Budleigh Salterton on Sunday night (May 3). Police were called to the B3178 East Budleigh Road where they found a car had left the road, the woman driver dead at the scene and her passenger needing hospital treatment for minor injuries. Officers investigating the crash are appealing for any information or dashcam footage. The East Budleigh Road was closed for around 12 hours, reopening to traffic the following morning after crash scene investigations had finished. Work by a group of community scientists in East Devon determined to improve one of the most polluted rivers in the county has forced the Environment Agency to take notice. Fortnightly testing of the River Otter by the Otter Valley Association (OVA) volunteers, plus data from South West Water (SWW) and the Environment Agency (EA) has revealed no improvement in water quality over the last five years.
