An East Devon businessman who started his car supplies shop from a cupboard under the stairs has won a top award for the success of his online sales.
James Swift, who launched the Car Mod Shop 20 years ago from Newton Poppleford, recently scooped the Best E-Commerce Business accolade at BizX 2026 Awards.
The Best E-Commerce Business award recognises companies that perform strongly in online retail, with a clear focus on customer service, innovation and sustained digital growth.
James received business coaching from Andrew De Groot of ActionCOACH Exeter, the company that runs the awards.
James said: “I was shocked to win, but it feels like all the hard work over the years has paid off.
“It was a real surprise, especially as I nearly didn’t enter. Andrew encouraged me to put the application in and I honestly thought it would be more of a learning experience for next year. To go on and win is amazing.”
The Car Mod Shop’s e-commerce business has grown over 20 years after starting as a side project by James. It is now recognised as a major online retailer selling more than 10,000 products and dispatching around 150 daily orders.
James said he started out as a ‘boy racer’, with a passion for cars, who spotted an opportunity to turn his hobby into a business.
Today, the company operates out of Sidmouth, selling across the UK and internationally.

“The sheer level of grit and determination he has shown since the double challenge of Brexit and Covid has been inspiring. He bounced back so well by relentlessly delivering for his customers.”
