Electric car owners in Honiton can now charge their vehicles for free at the town’s Tesco superstore. Volkswagen and Tesco have partnered to provide the largest retail electric vehicle charging network in the UK, giving motorists a place to top up their cars while doing their shopping. The Tesco superstore, in Battishorne Way, Honiton, has now been fitted with complimentary charging points where motorists can charge any electric car to the 7kW points, free of charge. Businesses ‘angry’ at a temporary one-way system for Budleigh Salterton High Street want it scrapped believing it will harm already Covid-hit trade. More than 45 traders and the public have hit back at the town council-agreed scheme, signing a petition to oppose the move. Outdoor food festival Honiton Gate to Plate has been shelved a fortnight after it was announced it would return in August with added Covid safety measures. A temporary one-way system running the entire length of Budleigh Salterton High Street has been backed by town councillors. The measure, flowing east to west from Rolle Road to the junction of West Hill and Station Road, aims to  keep shoppers safe and boost social distancing. Exeter High Street needs to be more than just a shopping hub in order to survive in a post-Covid-19 world, a retail roundtable has suggested.  Some 100 traders and representatives took part in the event which heard the city centre must adapt to carry on thriving after the coronavirus crisis. The pandemic has seen city centre footfall drop while online shopping has increased further. Pensioners living at Pinewood Residential Home, in Victoria Place, Budleigh, had a virtual craft session, learning how to make bath bombs by watching a video made by Exmouth party business, Mrs Snuggles.
