A week of events will celebrate the East Devon Pebblebed Heaths from Sunday, July 28 – Saturday, August 3. The festivities will toast the 2,700 acres of commons – stretching between Sidmouth, Budleigh Salterton, Exmouth and Woodbury – for their wildlife, geology, history and recreational use. Young farmers are to stage a fundraising cream tea in a marquee loaned by a bride and groom – and you are invited.  The event promises to be a great afternoon out for all family and will feature rounders, skittles and a raffle as well as the cream tea. A day of family fun at the fire service HQ, Clyst St George, will benefit Exmouth and Lympstone Hospiscare. Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service (DSFRS) has named the cause as one of the charities to receive funds from its open day, on Sunday, July 21, from 10am-4pm, to be held at the fire service headquarters and station, in Clyst St George. There will be entertainment, activities and fun for all ages; safety demonstrations, stalls, games, face painting, refreshments, children’s games, a bouncy castle, safety advice and the DSFRS band. Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service is holding an open day on Sunday (July 21). The event will take place at the service’s headquarters near Exeter from 10am to 4pm. Attractions will include safety demonstrations and advice, face painting, a bouncy castle, the service band, stalls, refreshments, and a barbecue. Preparations are in full swing for this year’s Axe Vale Show. After a miserable end to spring, event organisers are looking forward to staging an event the whole family can get outdoors and enjoy. The schedule has been published for this year’s Offwell Flower and Produce Show. Last year’s event was hampered by extreme heat and a clash with major sporting events. Taking place in the village hall on Saturday, September 14, the 2019 show has classes for everyone – from flower arrangers to vegetable growers. The subject of this year’s first competition in the decorative class is a flower display with an afternoon tea theme. A sporting theme is required for the traditional scarecrow competition.
