Clinton Devon Estates has released a series of images showing illegal mountain bike trails, vandalism to trees and dumped rubbish at Harpford Woods. The landowner says the damage left behind could pose ‘potentially fatal consequences’ for woodland workers operating forestry machinery. Honiton basked in heatwave temperatures as town crier Dave Retter led the centuries old tradition of hot pennies today. Fantastic scenes drew a big crowd into High Street to witness the famous garlanded glove be paraded and then raised. Flanked by civic leaders, Mr Retter uttered the same words said for hundreds of years – before ‘hot’ pennies were thrown into eager crowds at four locations in the town centre. Firefighters from Ottery St Mary attended a blaze at Metcombe, Tipton St John, this morning after a hedge fire spread to a shed. A chicken coop was also engulfed in flames. Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said the shed and chicken coop were in a garden and destroyed by the blaze, which was reported at 10.44am. A spokesperson said: “One fire appliance from Ottery St Mary attended a fire involving a hedgerow which spread to a shed in the garden. Fire crews from Ottery St Mary and Sidmouth responded to a report of a baler on fire in an agricultural barn early this morning. They were joined by a water carrier from Danes Castle and found the baler was in a yard. The report was received by emergency services at just after 4am. Crews found smoke issuing from the machinery. The fire was extinguished with one hose reel jet and small tools. Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: “There was 10 per cent damage by fire and the cause of the fire was accidental.”
