Sidmouth Town Football Club will begin their new life in the South West Peninsula League Premier Division East with an August 10 match at Torpoint Athletic. The game across the River Tamar from Plymouth will see the Vikings start a 38-match season in the new division. With Budleigh Salterton not applying to go up, it means that the East Devon derby matches for the Vikings in the coming season will be against Honiton Town and Axminster Town. Honiton Town Football Club is hosting a summer six-a-side football tournament for young players. The event, being staged on July 7, is being promoted by the Devon Football Association. Featuring under-nines and under-16s mixed, the tournament promises to be a real showcase of up-and-coming talent. In its bid to develop the beautiful game at all levels, the county football association has a four-year plan aimed at providing everyone with the opportunity to participate in football. Honiton Golf Club Seniors’ Section is staging its Texas Scamble Open on Friday, July 5. The contest open to players aged 60 or over on the day of the competition. The competition rules state those taking part must have a maximum handicap of 28 , less 10 per cent combined. Closing date for entries is June 14. Last month, the Middlehills club staged its Seniors’ Pairs Better Ball Stableford Competition. The next Seniors’ competition will be staged in September and is for the Henry Young Salver. A large contingent of Honiton trampolinists competed in the annual Griffin Association Friendly Novice Trampoline Competition, many coming home with award. They joined competitors from across East Devon and beyond at Strode College on June 10. Some of the ‘bouncers’ train at Leisure East Devon (LED) centres. In total, 51 of the competitors use LED facilities. They competed for individual and team medals. A total of 50 medals were brought home by local trampolinists. Ottery St Mary Cricket Club suffered a heavy defeat in their Tolchards Devon League East Devon derby meeting with Sidmouth at the Fortfield. Ottery skipper Will Harrison won the toss, opted to field and saw the home side reduced to 78-3 thanks to a catch behind by teenage wicketkeeper Lawrence Greenway off the bowling of skipper Harrison. Sidmouth Cricket Club 1st XI were 56-run winners when they visited the County Ground home of Exeter for their latest Tolchards Devon League top-flight game. The match was a significant one for one of the club’s younger players with Jash Patidar marking his first start in the senior XI by being given the new ball. He promptly claimed a huge scalp – removing Somerset and England Under-19 player Ben Green for four. Young footballers celebrated success in an Exeter City tournament at the home of Collumpton Rangers Brixington Blues Under-14s are celebrating after winning the Exeter City youth football tournament for the second year running. The competition was hosted this year by Cullompton Rangers Football Club. Brixington Blues entered two teams in the under-14s age group; one being Blues and the other United. In the early group stages Brixington Blues finished third and United took second place. That meant they met in the quarter-finals and a close contest ensued that was eventually won by United 1-0.
