The final Saturday of August saw matchday 18 bring the curtain down on the 2021 Tolchards Devon Cricket League and there were very mixed emotions for clubs across East Devon. Exmouth travelled to Hatherleigh knowing only a win would see them retain their Premier status, writes East Devon Sport editor Stephen Birley. The home side won the toss, batted first, and closed on 260-6 after 50 overs. Second change George Greenway was the most successful of the Exmouth bowlers with his return being 2-51. The Maer men were given a century start thanks to James Horler (48) and Andrew Buzza…

Despite a much-shortened cricket season owing to the coronavirus pandemic, the very popular Budleigh Cricket Club Community League competition was still able to be held. The fact that any play was possible this year, both in the Tolchards Devon League campaign and the club’s Community League, was very much down to the extreme efforts of Ottermouth groundsman Ray Dawson. Eight teams took part in the Community League, contested annually and played as a T20 format. The final was held last Sunday with Budleigh CC Academy batting first and leaving opponents, a team representing The Sir Walter Raleigh in East Budleigh,…

Sidbury Cricket Club Under-15 girls returned from a trip to Bovey Tracey for the Devon Super 8 competition with a silver medal. A long day in South Devon had begun at 9am and did not finish until 8pm. During their day of action, the Sidbury girls, who, unlike all the other teams with eight players, were only able to field seven. But undaunted by that, they won two games, tied one and lost one on their way to the silver medal. In their first game, against hosts club Bovey Tracey, Sidbury restricted them to 66 from their eight overs with…

Sidmouth completed yet another Devon League cricket season as a ‘champion’ club as the 1st XI defeated Heathcoat by 50 runs in the Tier One A final played at the Fortfield. The match was the final one in what has been an eight-game season for the club, a campaign reduced owing to the continuing coronavirus pandemic. Sidmouth first topped their group, finishing above Exmouth, Seaton and the Budleigh Salterton. A win at Plymouth then earnt them the right to stage the final against a Heathcoat side that had won their semi-final the week before against Bradninch. After winning the toss…

East Devon has a number of top sporting offerings this Saturday (September 12) – with local football and cricket action among the highlights. Top billing football-wise, arguably, goes to the FA Cup Preliminary Round tie being played at Southern Road where Exmouth Town take on Southern League outfit Melksham Town. Exmouth Town FC’s Martin Cook says: “We are asking supporters to get to the game earlier than they normally would. “The gates and the bar will open from 1pm and we shall be operating a track-and-trace system in line with the guidelines set down by the government and football authorities.” He…

Tipton St John Cricket Club were 50-run winners when they entertained Woodbury and Newton St Cyres – and the contest saw yet another century from the village’s prolific run scorer Phil Tolley. The home side batted first and it was Phil Tolley and David Thayre who were tasked with launching the Tipton innings. They saw off the new ball, though Thayre did offer a chance – one that was dropped when he was on two! The openers took their side into three figures before Thayre succumbed to the 62nd delivery he faced, bowled by Max Weston for 59, an innings that…

Tipton St John’s David O’Higgins continues to defy the ageing process as he consistently makes his mark in village cricket. The 83-years-young cricketer claimed a fivefer as Tipton defeated Cavendish Cavaliers in their latest match. Tipton batted first and laboured in the face of some good bowling. However, openers David Thayre and Chris Tubbs put on a 50 partnership in 15 overs before Tubbs was run out for 14 and was followed by Dave Jessop bowled for 12 and Al Matthews was trapped leg before for a single. Phil Tolley came in down the order and, with Thayre, pushed the…

The Tolchards Devon Cricket League draws to a close this coming Saturday (August 31) and none of our local sides have too much to play for. Exmouth secured their Premier status for another year last weekend and their latest outing saw them travel to Torquay where they won by three five wickets and, in doing so, consigned Torquay to an instant return to the A Division. This Saturday, the Maer men bring the curtain down on the campaign with a home game against a Sandford side who will be looking to bank the five points they need to be sure…

These images give a glimpse of how a new cricket ground in Budleigh Salterton could look, after plans were revealed this week. Proposals for land north of South Farm Cottages, off East Budleigh Road, feature two pitches, a pavilion, car parking, equipment store and netting. It is hoped the move would end years of flooding misery for the town’s cricket club. The reason that the cricket club needs to relocate is that the existing ground…has been affected on several occasions by catastrophic floodingClinton Devon Estates is seeking permission for the scheme from East Devon District Council (EDDC) “The reason that…
