A volunteer lifesaver in Sidmouth has been humbled by community kindness after residents rallied round when his business was burgled. Guy Russell discovered on Monday morning that crooks had smashed their way into a secure seafront shed belonging to Jurassic Paddle Sports and stolen a haul of kit. A week of events will celebrate the East Devon Pebblebed Heaths from Sunday, July 28 – Saturday, August 3. The festivities will toast the 2,700 acres of commons – stretching between Sidmouth, Budleigh Salterton, Exmouth and Woodbury – for their wildlife, geology, history and recreational use. Excitement is soaring over an air extravaganza in Sidmouth later this summer – after it was revealed five different display teams will be flying over the town. Hopes are sky-high for the event and huge crowds are expected to descend on The Esplanade on Friday, August 23. The RAF Falcons Parachute Display Team, Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Spitfire, Strikemaster Jets Pair and RAF Chinook will all be taking part. Volunteer drivers from Sidmouth Hospiscare have been honoured for their contribution to the local community. They took the Best Team Contribution Award at Devon County Council’s Community Transport Awards. The special award was given in recognition of the competition’s 20th year. In total, more than 60 nominations were received. We’re very fortunate that our county has plenty of community-spirited people; these awards are a way of thanking just some of them but everyone involved with community transport deserves praise. Sidmouth went quackers for its annual Duck Derby today (Sunday, July 21). The tradition, organised by the Lions Club of Sidmouth, attracted huge crowds to The Byes. There was plenty of fun on offer for children with a big slide, bouncy castle and ice creams. Youngsters took part in a host of ‘duck and spoon’ races – and mums, dads and grandparents also got to compete. An 82-year-old woman who was reported missing from Sidmouth today (Friday, July 19) has been found safe and well. Daphne West was located by police following a search and public appeal. A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesperson said tonight: “Daphne West, who was missing from Sidmouth, has been located safe and well by police this evening. “Police would like to thank everyone who responded to the earlier appeal with information.” Read more Sidmouth news here.

The speed limit on the busy A3052 between Sidmouth and Newton Poppleford is set to be reduced to 40mph. County councillors have supported the move at Four Elms Hill – as well as extending the ‘no overtaking’ zone along part of the road. Slashing the speed limit by 20mph was approved by members of the East Devon Highways and Traffic Orders Committee (HATOC) yesterday (Thursday, July 18). There was a right royal celebration at The Donkey Sanctuary, near Sidmouth, today when the Duchess of Cornwall popped in on her birthday to mark the charity’s golden anniversary. Her Royal Highness spent her 72nd birthday naming a three-week-old foal Sweet Pea. The little donkey was born at the sanctuary after her mum Poppy’s owner could no longer care for her. Camilla was welcomed to The Donkey Sanctuary by children from Sidmouth Primary School and the sanctuary’s CEO, Mike Baker, who gave her a tour of the charity’s global headquarters. Staff at the state-of-the-art veterinary hospital at Sidmouth’s The Donkey Sanctuary will feature on CBBC show The Pets Factor on Friday, July 19. The international animal welfare charity will star in the programme when it is aired at 9.05am and repeated later in the day at 4.35pm. James Greenwood, one of the show’s professional vets, visited The Donkey Sanctuary earlier this year.
