The Sidmouth Surf Lifesaving Club event, on July 14, was hailed a success as the surf lifesaving board and ski challenges were tackled by competitors of all ages. Police were called by a number of residents in the Sidmouth area yesterday, Wednesday, July 11, following reports of a man acting suspiciously while going door-to-door to sell goods. Devon and Cornwall Police sent a patrol to the area after residents said they were met with aggression when they declined to buy. Officers said they spoke to a teenager and warned him about his behaviour. A hug in a mug is available at Sidmouth’s youth café as mental and sexual health issues are tackled. The Sidmouth Youth Café is open tomorrow, Saturday, July 13, and young people aged from 10 to 18 years old are invited to hang out, have fun, and talk through any life concerns they may have. The youth café is currently a three-session trial but if it proves popular, organisers hope to open weekly. An award-winning garden design that shines a spotlight on the importance donkeys make to the world’s poorest communities is on show in Sidmouth. The Donkeys Matter artisan garden scooped the people’s choice award, and a silver medal in the judges’ awards, at the Royal Horticultural Society’s Chelsea Flower Show in May. Now the garden has returned home to The Donkey Sanctuary, where it has been painstakingly rebuilt and will be on show, for free, from Monday, July 15. Police are investigating the theft of three rare pedal cycles from a property on East Hill, near Sidmouth. The vintage-style bikes were stolen between 2.30pm and 3pm on Wednesday, June 12. Officers have appealed for information over the distinctive items and have asked the public to keep an eye out for them. A red and orange Raleigh men’s sports bike, an orange Raleigh men’s sport bike with chrome front spikes, and a blue Dawes women’s racing bike were stolen. The shades have been tailor-made for poorly Jonty by The Donkey Sanctuary to protect his ailing vision from the summer sun’s UV rays. William Hill which owns betting shops in Honiton, Sidmouth, Exmouth and Seaton has announced plans to close 700 licensed betting offices.
