Work on a £55million infrastructure initiative on the outskirts of Exeter is set to begin – paving the way for new homes, jobs and schools. The first phase of the project to the south-west of the city will get under way on Monday, August 10. A former Labour councillor from Exeter has been handed a suspended prison sentence after being found with more than 36,000 indecent images of children and other extreme pornography. Roger Spackman, aged 50, of College Road, was arrested at his home when officers seized 68 items including electronic devices, hard drives and mobile phones. The illegal material found on them by officers spanned a decade. Ex-city councillor Spackman admitted possessing and making indecent images and was today (Tuesday, July 28) sentenced to ten months in prison, suspended for two years, by a judge at Exeter Crown Court. Exeter has been named as the trial location to lead the way in testing rapid charging points for electric vehicles. Western Power Distribution (WPD) has teamed up with Moto motorway services, at M5 junction 30 Sandygate, Exeter, to test and trial new technology, starting in spring 2021. The installation will be piloted over a six-month period to evaluate its performance and the benefits of rapid charging. The project aims to make charging at motorway service stations easier for operators and customers, and make installation cheaper, WPD said. Fans have helped Exeter City Football Club net a £9,000 new storage facility at its Cliff Hill Training Ground. The new addition has replaced ‘out-of-date’ sheds which were no longer deemed fit-for-purpose. It has been funded thanks to £4,500 from the club’s supporters’ trust and the equivalent sum as a loan. Another a donation of £400 from the Grecian Goal group has ensured an essential footpath has also been completed. Police investigating reports of a hit-and-run in Exeter, where three cars were damaged, are appealing for witnesses. Devon and Cornwall Police said a blue BMW reportedly hit three cars in a residential area of Farm Hill, Exwick, caused damage, fled the scene and made off from officers, on Friday, July 17, between 5pm and 5.20pm. Investigating officers want to hear from anyone who witnessed the hit-and-run, or who has CCTV footage from the Farm Hill area of Exeter. Funds are needed to install specialist lifesaving equipment at Exeter Quay that can stop people drowning if they fall into the water. A Crowdfunder campaign to raise £4,000 has been launched to pay for throwline boards with emergency rescue lines and telescopic rescue poles that can be used by the public in an emergency. Crews from Danes Castle and Middlemoor were called to Sowton Industrial Estate to tackle a fire in a coffee roasting machine on Monday morning (July 20). When the firefighters arrived at Orchard Court, in Heron Road,  Sowton, Exeter, shortly before 11am, they confirmed a fire within the flue system of the coffee roasting machine.
