William Hill which owns betting shops in Honiton, Sidmouth, Exmouth and Seaton has announced plans to close 700 licensed betting offices. The company says the closures could put 4,500 jobs at risk nationwide. It has entered into a consultation process with staff and the location of under-threat shops has not been revealed. Police are appealing for dashcam footage after a 27-year-old man from Colyton died in a collision involving a bicycle and a van on the A35. The collision happened at Raymonds Hill near Axminster at 5.30am on Thursday, July 4. The dead man was riding the bicycle at the time of the incident and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Devon and Cornwall Police say his next of kin have been informed. Concerns over a new school funding formula has prompted East Devon MP Hugo Swire to sign a letter to the Chancellor, Philip Hammond. Supporting the cross-party f40 Campaign Group, which is demanding fairer funding for schools across the UK, Mr Swire said he was “pleased to sign this letter from the f40 campaign for fairer school funding”. He added: “Each child in a Devon school still receives £304 less than the national average, meaning that Devon misses out on £27 million per year. Firefighters were called to tackle a motorbike blaze near Broadclyst Station on Wednesday, July 3, shortly after 4.30pm. A fire crew from Middlemoor went to Cotterell Road where they found a motorcycle on fire. The fire service said the motorcycle was destroyed by the blaze and the council was called to check damage to the road surface. A Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “The crew used one hose reel jet to extinguish the fire which caused 100 per cent damage to the motorbike on the public highway.”

South West Water has issued a safety warning after a man died in a reservoir. “Reservoirs are beautiful – but can also be dangerous,” is the message it is sending local residents and holidaymakers.
