Businesses are being warned by police to be aware of suspicious activity involving males attempting  to buy high value items in shops. A spokesperson said the purchases are ‘believed to be fraudulent’. Shop owners are being urged to be on the look out for males entering their premises and attempting to buy expensive items with more than one payment method. It is understood the men are sometimes using several cards to make a single payment. Plans to demolish a former community hub in Beer so social housing can be built on the plot have been shelved – after bats were found living there. Proposals to knock down Beer Social Club, in Berry Hill, were submitted in July after the venue shut last year. Beer Community Land Trust stated in its application it wanted to use the land for up to seven new dwellings as part of a social housing development for the village. A total of 119 guns were handed to police in the space of a fortnight during a firearms amnesty in Devon and Cornwall. The haul of handguns, shotguns, rifles and pistols surrendered in both counties, pictured above, is now destined for destruction. Temporary traffic lights have been erected on the A3052 between Sidmouth and Exeter because of a burst water main. Motorists are being told to expect ‘heavy delays’.
