An Exeter man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and is in police custody in connection with a stabbing near a city centre park.
The emergency services were on Monday night (March 23) called to Clifton Hill, Newtown, in Exeter, after a man in his 50s was stabbed and taken to hospital in a serious condition.
Detective investigating the stabbing are calling on the public to report any information.
Areas of Newtown, around Belmont Park, have been cordoned off to the public while police investigate.
A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesperson said: “Detectives are looking for witnesses following reports of a stabbing last night [Monday 23 March] in Exeter.
“We were notified at around 10.40pm to reports of a serious assault on Clifton Hill in Exeter.
“Officers attended the scene and a man in his 50s was taken to hospital in a serious condition. His next of kin have been informed.
“Several scene guards are currently in place in and around the Newtown area in Exeter. The neighbourhood team will be carrying out local foot patrols throughout the day.”
Police on Tuesday (March 24) confirmed an arrest had been made and a suspect remains in police custody.
The force spokesperson added: “A 49-year-old man from Exeter has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and is in police custody.”
