Scores of swimmers wearing festive fancy dress, Santa hats, and tinsel lined up o Exmouth beach, ready to plunge into the chilly sea on the strike of 11 o’clock.

The Exmouth Christmas annual swim attracts hundreds to the beach each year to watch or take part.

Ahead of the countdown to running down the beach into the chilly December water, the crowd sang a quick chorus of We Wish You a Merry Christmas, accompanied by a lone kilt-wearing bagpiper.

Swimmers pulled out all the stops with their fancy dress, as groups of friends and families coordinated outfits, hats and costumes.

As in previous years, the swim set off at 11am sharp, with hundreds running down the beach and plunging into the wintery water – then screaming in shock on meeting the waves.

The event attracts swimmers from all over the world, flocking to Exmouth to take part in the annual Christmas Day swim.

The Exmouth Christmas Day swim started more than 50 years ago, in the late 1960s, when six friends met on the beach near the clocktower.
