Month-long one-way system for traffic in Exmouth town centre amid gas pipe upgrade

Motorists driving through Exmouth town centre face a month-long one-way traffic system from next month, amid a gas pipe upgrade.

Work to upgrade gas pipes in Exmouth started on The Parade on Monday, May 12, and from June 2 until July 4, traffic will be sent one-way along the stretch of road.

Wales & West Utilities said if the work goes to plan, the road should reopen for two-way traffic at the start of July.

A spokesperson for the gas pipe upgrade said: “Wales & West Utilities has worked closely with Devon County Council, and it has been agreed that a directional road closure on The Parade will be in place between 2 June – 4 July.”

The work, in the Parade area of the town, will begin on May 12 and, barring any engineering difficulties, will finish at the beginning of July.

Wales & West Utilities said the work was ‘essential’ to keep the gas flowing safely and reliably to local homes and businesses, amid preparing the network for greener gasses.

Roxanne Whittaker, Wales & West Utilities, who is managing this gas pipe upgrade work, said: “We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it really is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future.

“We’ll have a team of gas engineers on site throughout the project to make sure our work is completed as safely and as quickly as possible while keeping disruption to a minimum.”

She added: “While most of the gas network is underground and out of sight, it plays a central role in the daily lives of people across Exmouth. Whether it’s heating your home, making the family dinner or having a hot bath, we understand how important it is for your gas supply to be safe and reliable and there when you need it.

“This work is essential to keep the gas flowing to local homes and businesses today, and to make sure the gas network is ready to transport hydrogen and biomethane, so we can all play our part in a green future.”
