Police arrest Exeter boy, 14, in connection to attacks on two men in Exmouth town centre

Attacks on two men in Exmouth town centre has resulted in police arresting a teenage boy from Exeter.

Police said a man aged 65, and a 56-year-old, were injured in separate attacks on Monday, April 15, at a shop in the Magnolia Centre, and inside the town’s indoor market.

A 14-year-old boy from Exeter was arrested on suspicion of assault by beating and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. He has been released on conditional police bail until July 18, 2024, while enquiries continue.

Grant Leitch, Exmouth’s new Inspector, said the town’s police ‘refuses to accept or allow such behaviour’.

Police were called to the town centre in connection to two separate attacks, one in Magnolia Walk, the other in Exmouth Indoor Market, on The Strand.

Officers investigating the attacks gathered CCTV footage from the area, and heard from witnesses, before identifying suspects and making an arrest.

Grant Leitch, Sector Inspector for East and Mid Devon, said: “My professional neighbourhood team are taking these reports extremely seriously and have conducted a thorough investigation.

“We were deployed as soon as we were able and from gathering evidence from witnesses and CCTV, have identified suspects and carried out an arrest.

“A juvenile suspect has been released on bail. The victims in the case have been updated on the progress of the investigation.”

He added: “We take reports of this type extremely seriously and our neighbourhood team refuses to accept or allow such behaviour.”

A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesperson said: “A teenage boy has been arrested in connection with two separate assaults on older males aged 56 and 65 in Exmouth.

“Police were contacted after recent incidents at a shop on Magnolia Walk and Exmouth Indoor Market on The Strand.

“In both of these incidents which took place on Monday 15 April, an older male was assaulted and injured.

“Following enquiries by the neighbourhood team a 14-year-old boy from Exeter was arrested on suspicion of assault by beating and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

“He has been released on conditional police bail until 18 July while enquiries continue.”
