Man arrested on suspicion of rape after alleged attack in Exeter

Police say they have arrested a man on suspicion of rape after an alleged attack on a woman in Exeter city centre.

Officers continue to appeal for information following the incident in the Catacombs area at around 2am on Saturday, June 18.

The public are still likely to see an increased police presence in and around the area as enquiries continue into this matter….

A force spokesperson said: “Police have now arrested a man in his 40s from Exeter on suspicion of rape; he remains in police custody and awaits questioning.

“Police enquiries are continuing, and detectives are still appealing for information from the public.

“Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact police via 101@dc.police.uk or by telephone on 101, quoting crime reference CR/053679/22.

“The public are still likely to see an increased police presence in and around the area as enquiries continue into this matter.”

Detective Inspector Stephanie Blundell said on Monday, June 20: “We are asking anyone who was in the area of Bartholomew Street West, close to the junction of Fore Street, between the hours of 1.30am and 2.15am on Saturday morning [June 18] to contact us.

“We are particularly interested in locating any dashcam footage of the area or any private CCTV recordings that people may have of the street.

“The public are likely to see an increased police presence in and around the area as police enquiries continue.”
