Neil Parish to resign as Tiverton and Honiton MP over House of Commons porn ‘moment of madness’

Tory Neil Parish is quitting as MP for Tiverton and Honiton after he admitted watching pornography in the House of Commons in ‘a moment of madness’.

Mr Parish, 65, told BBC South West today (Saturday) he had viewed adult content on his mobile phone in Parliament twice – and that it was ‘absolutely, totally wrong’.

He said the first occasion was accidental and he stumbled across an X-rated website while looking at tractors online.

Married dad-of-two Mr Parish added that he has decided to resign over the ‘furore and damage’ caused to his family and constituency.

Holding back tears, he told the BBC’s Politics South West show: “I thought that I could explain to the standards committee what happened and it would have been worth explaining what happened…but in the end I could see the furore and the damage I was causing to my family and my constituency and association was just wasn’t worth carrying on.

“Funnily enough it was tractors I was looking at…so I did get into another website that had a sort of very similar name and I watched it for a bit which I shouldn’t have done.

“My crime – biggest crime – is that on another occasion I went in a second time, and that was deliberate.”

He said the latter occasion was ‘was sitting waiting to vote on the side of the chamber’.

Mr Parish is a farmer by trade who has represented the Tiverton and Honiton constituency for 12 years.

He was suspended from the Conservative Party whip on Friday over the allegations.

Mr Parish said he was ‘not proud of what I was doing’ but denied he wanted anyone to see what he was viewing.

He added: “The one thing I wasn’t doing, and which I will take to my grave as being true, is I was not actually making sure people could see it – in fact I was doing quite the opposite.”

“I must have taken complete leave of my senses and my sensibilities and a sense of decency, everything.”
