Police enquiries are continuing into how a fire in a field near Honiton started on Sunday night, destroying a 4×4 truck (April 22).

Firefighters from Honiton were called to an area of forestry at Stockland at around 10pm, where they found what was thought to be a 4×4 on fire in a field.

Police were called to the scene by the fire service because the blaze was thought to be suspicious.

The fire crew wore breathing apparatus and used a hose jet to tackle a blaze involving a towing trailer, cylinder and machinery.

The blaze destroyed a Nissan 4×4, the fire service said.

A Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “One fire appliance from Honiton was mobilised to a report of an unknown fire in forestry in the Stockland area.

“On arrival at the scene fire crews reported a vehicle well alight in a field.

“Police were requested to attend due to the suspicious nature of the fire.

“The vehicle, believed to be a Nissan X Trail, was completely destroyed by fire.

“Crews used two breathing apparatus wearers and one hose reel jet to extinguish the fire which also involved a towing trailer, a cylinder and garden machinery.”

A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesman said: “We are aware of a fire in a field in the Honiton area; at this time this has not been deemed suspicious and enquiries continue into this matter.”
