New ‘short-term hire’ beach huts have been built at Budleigh Salterton beach – and could rake in thousands of pounds a week for their council owner.
A dozen units have replaced old structures that had ‘come to the end of their natural life’ on the shingle shoreline.
Commissioned and funded by East Devon District Council (EDDC), they are available to rent for day or weekly rates.
Five large huts can each be hired for £35 a day or £110 a week – and seven small huts for £32 a day or £100 a week.
EDDC said early booking was ‘recommended as the huts prove very popular’.
Fully booked at the daily rates, the huts have the earning potential of up to around £2,800 a week for the council.
The number at just the weekly rates is £1,250.
Budleigh and Raleigh representative Councillor Paul Jarvis said: “This can only be a step forward in sharing our wonderful resources.
“Both locals and visitors can both enjoy the use of the huts, giving them all a truly unique Budleigh experience.”
Fellow ward member Cllr Tom Wright added: “It will be wonderful to be able to offer these bright new beach huts. After two dreadful years, an omen of things to come.”
Members of the public can make bookings through the Budleigh Information Centre until 23 October 2022.
