App-y Easter! Exmouth brassed-off dinosaurs join UK-wide guide to getting outdoors

A free-to-download app encouraging people to get outdoors now features the Exmouth dinosaur brass rubbing trail – just in time for the Easter holidays.

Ordnance Survey developed its Secret Stories app for families and individuals to uncover a host of self-guided tours across the country, in a bid to bring towns and cities to life.

The Secret Stories app, available to download for free from the Google Play and iTunes store, aims to make walks fun and inspire people to explore outdoors.

The new trail in East Devon is now available to download, by searching for Exmouth’s Brassed-Off Dinosaurs.

The Secret Stories app now includes the Exmouth dinosaur trail.

Exmouth Town Council said the trail was the ‘ideal’ free activity for budding dinosaur hunters and adults who enjoy a challenge.

The self-guided circular walk trail combines clues to hunt and find, plus stories told in a Horrible Histories-style, while collecting brass rubbings along the way.

Those taking part will need to take along paper and crayons. Or you can pick up a dinosaur pack for £1, with everything you need, from the Exmouth Tourist Information, in The Strand.

The town council said Ordnance Survey developed its Secret Stories app after the number of people exploring their own neighbourhood rose during the pandemic lockdowns, and connected with towns and cities for potential partnership opportunities.

Veronica Boatman, tourism officer for Exmouth Town Council, said: “We immediately saw the potential and a brilliant opportunity to use the app to enhance the dinosaur brass rubbing trail.

“Working in partnership with Ordnance Survey the Exmouth’s Brassed-Off Dinosaurs trail was created.

“We really hope that children and families enjoy it as much as we did in developing it.”

The Ordnance Survey said: “The Secret Stories app is free to download and brings towns and cities to life, with each self-guided tour revealing a diverse and interesting mixture of folklore, celebrity, history and myth as you follow the route around.

“Each Secret Stories tour varies, but can contain a mixture of audio clips, images, challenges, puzzles, teasers and directions to help you immerse yourself in each location as you move from story to story.”
