East Devon football round-up: Exmouth back to winning ways, fine triumph for Honiton, Sidmouth stalemate, and defeats for Axminster and Ottery

Wins for Exmouth Town and Honiton Town, a draw for Sidmouth Town, and defeats for Axminster Town and Ottery St Mary featured in fixtures for East Devon football sides on Saturday, February 12.
Stephen Birley reports on teams in the district playing at Step Five and Six on the second weekend of the month.

Exmouth Town triumph in front of big turnout

Another huge turnout, the biggest of the day in the Toolstation Western League Premier Division (Step Five), was at Southern Road.
It saw Exmouth Town strike early in their meeting with Shepton Mallett.
Indeed, it was a first-minute goal from striker Levi Landricombe that ultimately saw Town bounce back to winning ways after last Saturday’s disappointment at Cadbury Heath, thanks to a 1-0 success.
The win, a 15th in 25 league starts for Exmouth, means they stay second in the table, ten points shy of leaders Tavistock who have played two games more.
Since a 1-1 draw with Helston Athletic on December 11, Town have won five successive home matches, scoring 13 goals and conceding just two.
Next up for Kevin Hill and his men is a home game on Saturday, February 19, against Wellington, who they defeated 3-0 in a Les Phillips Cup tie at the start of the month.

Honiton Town sink Elburton Villa

The ‘result of the day’, certainly in terms of local clubs at step six, had to be the 2-1 win for Honiton Town in their South West Peninsula League, Premier East, game at Elburton Villa.
All three goals came in the second half, with Lewis Couch putting the Hippos ahead in the 55th minute.
The home side levelled 18 minutes later, but Town claimed the points thanks to a Fin Rooke strike.
It’s three games unbeaten now for the Hippos who have back-to-back away wins under their belt for the second time this season.
Next up for Town is a Saturday, February 19, Mountbatten Park meeting with Newton Abbot Spurs.

Five games unbeaten for Sidmouth Town

Sidmouth Town made it five games without a defeat under Billy Rouse with the Vikings keeping a third successive clean sheet in a 0-0 Manstone Lane meeting with Holswort
The last time the ‘new look’ Town side conceded a goal was on January 22, when visiting Dartmouth United were beaten 6-1.
Since then, the Vikings have drawn 0-0 at Elburton Villa, beaten Stoke Gabriel and Torbay Police 4-0 and now shared a goalless draw with Holsworthy.
On Saturday, February 19, the Vikings visit Torridgeside.

Axminster Tigers tamed by table-topping Okehampton

Axminster Town are now nine games without a win after a 3-0 Tiger Way defeat to table-topping Okehampton Argyle.
The last time the Tigers enjoyed success was back on November 17, when they were 1-0 home winners over Honiton Town.
It’s a measure of how well the Tigers are doing this season that just three teams have lost fewer games than the six they have.
In last season’s league campaign, the Tigers lost seven of their first ten outings.
On Saturday, February 19, Dan Prettejohn and his Axminster Town team entertain a Plymouth Marjon side they beat 5-0 in Plymouth back in October.

Fourth-straight defeat for Ottery

Ottery St Mary suffered a fourth-straight defeat when beaten 5-0 at Elmore, where all the goals coming in the first-half.
Since former manager Billy Rouse departed for Sidmouth Town, the Otters have not scored a goal while they have shipped 35.
This Saturday, February 19, the Otters are in home action against Ivybridge Town.
