Road closure and nine months of work to upgrade gas pipes to start near Sidmouth

Work to upgrade gas pipes near Sidmouth is set to begin on Monday (February 14) and last for around nine months.

Wales & West Utilities is starting work to upgrade gas pipes in the Cotford Road area of Sidbury next week and is due to finish by the end of November.

A road closure with a diversion lasting just over three weeks will be in place on Cotford Road between Monday, February 28 and Friday, March 25.

The company said a diversion route will be clearly marked and gas engineers would be onsite throughout the project to ensure the work was completed quickly, to lessen disruption.

Wales & West Utilities Jake Sami, who is managing this gas pipe upgrade work, said: “We know that working on roads like these is not ideal, but it really is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future.

“We’ll have a team of gas engineers on site throughout the project to make sure our work is completed as safely and as quickly as possible while keeping disruption to a minimum.

“We’re very aware of the effect that our work can have on communities and commuters which is why we’re working closely with Devon County Council to agree the best way to get this essential work done while causing the least inconvenience to the community.”

He added: “While most of the gas network is underground and out of sight, it plays a central role in the daily lives of people across the Sidbury area.

“Whether it’s heating your home, making the family dinner or having a hot bath, we understand how important it is for your gas supply to be safe and reliable and there when you need it.”

The £165,000 work will begin on February 14, a move the utilities company said was ‘essential’ to keep the gas flowing safely to heat and power homes and businesses local to the Sidmouth area.

Barring any engineering difficulties, it is due to finish by the end of November, Wales & West Utilities said.

A spokesperson for the utilities company said: “To keep disruption to a minimum, Wales & West Utilities has worked closely with Devon County Council to plan the work.

“So that engineers and the local community are kept safe, it has been agreed that a road closure will be in place on Cotford Road between 28 February – 25 March. A diversion route will be clearly signposted.”
