LGBT+ History Month celebrations for Exmouth as town hosts a month of events

LGBT+ History Month is being celebrated in Exmouth throughout February as a host of organisations join forces to promote equality and inclusion.

Exmouth Pride said the aim of the different events was to encourage people to try new activities, get together , meet LGBT+ people, and socialise.

Al Brown, part of the team putting the programme together, said: “Different things appeal to different people but sometimes we are reluctant to try new stuff that we might enjoy.

“We hope that this will encourage people to try something new, get together and meet other LGBT+ people in a welcoming and supportive way.”

Internationally, February has been identified as a time to ‘celebrate and explore’ the history of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transsexual (LGBT+) community.

In Exmouth organisers are promoting a mind, body and spirit theme, by working with Exmouth Sports Centre, the town’s Quakers, library staff and Exmouth Park Run to encourage LGBT+ people to take part

A workshop on Humour for Health at the seafront Bath House pub, a performance of an LGBT+-themed play at Exeter’s Northcott Theatre and a screening of the iconic film Pride, being shown at the town’s library, are also part of the programme.

Events run right through February and full details are available on the Exmouth Pride website and Facebook page.

A spokesperson for events said: “This is the third year that Exmouth Pride has marked LGBT+ History Month, building on the success of the annual Pride festival which has been running in the town since 2015.”

The group is gearing up for a post-pandemic return to Exmouth Pride, planned for June 18, in the Manor Gardens – where LGBT+ people and their families, friends and allies can mark Pride together, promoting equality and inclusion for LGBT+ people (Lesbian, Bisexual, Gay, Transgender and other minority sexual orientations and gender identities).
