‘Impact of the pandemic’ forces permanent closure of Honiton High Street Hospiscare charity shop

The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic has resulted in Hospiscare announcing the closure of one of its charity shops in Honiton.

The charity said its High Street shop has closed permanently ‘due to the impact of the pandemic’ but its sister shop, in Dowell Street, also in Honiton, will remain open.

The charity thanked all who had given their time to help in the High Street shop over the years, or supported the store in other ways.

Hospiscare urged bargain hunters to support the charity through its ‘Aladdin’s cave’  Dowell Street store – a short walk from the closed High Street shop.

Caroline Brown, Hospiscare’s shops development manager, said: “Sadly we’ve had to close our High Street shop in Honiton due to the ongoing impact of the pandemic but we’d like to say a huge thank you to the many staff, volunteers, shoppers, donors and others who have supported the store over the years.

“We’re delighted that our Dowell Street location will remain open to continue raising vital funds for our patients and their families.

“The last two years have been really challenging for the hospice and last year we cared for more patients than ever before.

“We hope the brilliant Honiton community will come and shop with us – and continue to donate quality pre-loved items – at Dowell Street.”

Situated just off Honiton’s High Street, the Dowell Street store is an ‘Aladdin’s cave’ of second-hand items, including furniture, homewares, electrical items, books and women and men’s clothing.

With new stock added on a regular basis, Hospiscare said shoppers will have plenty of variety to choose from , plus their purchases will support end-of-life care in the heart of Devon.

As the hospice charity for Exeter, Mid and East Devon, Hospiscare supports more than 2,500 patients living with a terminal illness every year.

The charity receives just 18 per cent of its funding from the NHS, making the income from its charity shops vital in supporting local families when they need it most.
