Council cuts costs of winter parking across towns in East Devon in bid to boost trade

Fees in council pay-and-display car parks in East Devon have been slashed until the end of March 2022 in a bid to boost winter trade.

East Devon District Council (EDDC) has announced a £2 all-day deal from now until the end of March 2022, valid at its car parks in Exmouth, Seaton, Sidmouth, Budleigh Salterton, Beer, Axminster, Honiton, Ottery St Mary, Lympstone and Colyton.

Tickets bought in one town can be transferred and used in another area’s car park on the same day, the council said.

The council said its parking cost cuts were as a result from feedback from East Devon residents, and aimed to boost ‘shop local’ campaigns.

Councillor Paul Hayward, EDDC’s deputy leader and portfolio holder for economy and assets, said: “As in previous years, we want to support businesses in all of our town and village high streets as much as we can through the quieter winter months especially after the challenges of the last year.

“The feedback we received from last year’s parking offer showed that it was a great success and, as in 2020, you can also use the same £2 ticket in any other East Devon pay and display car park on that day so why not visit another local town in the district to discover something different on offer.

“There are hidden gems in every town and village that would love to welcome you inside.”

Pay-and-display tickets costing £2 will be valid for the whole day, from whenever shoppers arrive, until midnight.

EDDC hopes the reduced parking rates will boost trade in the ‘traditionally quieter months’ of January and February.

Cllr Hayward said: “The ticket will be valid right up until midnight in all of our pay and display car parks in Exmouth, Seaton, Sidmouth, Budleigh Salterton, Beer, Axminster, Honiton, Ottery St Mary, Lympstone or Colyton.

“We want to do all we can to help traders, retailers and hospitality businesses across East Devon.”

He adedd: “I’d like to personally thank each and every customer who took advantage of our previous parking offer – your custom was a huge boost to the local economy.

“Your local high street needs you more than ever at this time of uncertainty – and I hope that this parking offer will encourage you to visit and support your community businesses.

“There has never been a better time to shop local.”
