Seaton man, 89, dies after he was seriously injured in a crash at Sidmouth

Police have named an 89-year-old man from Seaton who died after he was seriously injured in a crash at Sidmouth.

Victor Smith, 89, had been traveling on the A3052 at Sidmouth on Friday afternoon (December 3) when the black Renault Clio he was driving was involved in a crash with a blue VW Exclusive.

Mr Smith died at Derriford Hospital, Plymouth, with what police described as ‘serious injuries’.

Mr Smith’s passenger, a woman in her 80s, remains in hospital, said police.

The driver of the VW car, a man in his 70s, who was also taken to Derriford Hospital with what police called ‘less serious injuries’, was later discharged home.

Devon and Cornwall Police have repeated an earlier appeal for witnesses to the crash, or dashcam footage.

A police spokesman said: “The collision involved a black Renault Clio and a blue VW Exclusive.

“The driver of the Clio was taken to Derriford Hospital with serious injuries where he later died.

“He has since been named as 89-year-old Victor Smith from Seaton; his next of kin have been informed.

“The passenger in the Clio is a woman in her 80s and she remains in hospital.

“The driver of the VW is a man in his 70s who was also taken to Derriford Hospital but with less serious injuries and has since returned home.”

Police were called to the A3052 at Sidmouth shortly after 2.30pm on Friday, December 3 following reports of a two-vehicle collision.

The road was closed for eight hours as investigation work at the scene took place.

The police spokesman said: “Officers continue to appeal for witnesses and would also like to hear from anyone with dashcam footage that could assist with enquiries.”
