Female footballers in Axminster are making history as the first team from the town to make it to the FA Cup.
The Tiger Way ladies take on Budleigh Salterton Ladies in the second qualifying round of the competition in what will be an East Devon derby on Sunday, October 3.
And the side say grass-roots teams like theirs are ‘breaking the glass ceiling’ thanks to women’s football setting new records for attendance, support, sponsors and media coverage.
Axminster Town Ladies have this season seen nearly 50 local businesses – from accountants to electricians – support them through sponsorships.
They received a bye in the Vitality Women’s FA Cup on September 12 and are now inviting people to ‘watch history in the making’ on October 3.
Under new manager Russell Weller, the ladies have made a strong start to the season – thumping Bradninch 9-0 away and beating Exeter Development 4-3.
Manager Russell said: “We have exciting times ahead, not just for the ladies, but the whole club, with the ladies being the first team from Axminster Town to be entered into the FA Cup, giving them the opportunity to make history.
“I really hope the whole town gets behind the ladies and supports them on Sunday, October 3, at Tiger Way.
“Their support will not only encourage the team, but we want everyone to share in our ‘moment’.”
