There is plenty of football and rugby sporting action in East Devon on the first Saturday of September, writes East Devon Sport editor Stephen Birley.
Exmouth Town are away in FA Cup action on Saturday, September 4, and travel to Plymouth Parkway FC where they will meet Cornish side Truro City (3pm) in the 1st Qualifying Round of the FA Cup.
Meanwhile, in terms of games in our area, two of our four East Devon clubs playing in the South West Peninsula League Premier East are in home action with Ottery St Mary, who moved up to fourth with a Tuesday night 7-0 thrashing of hosts Bovey Tracey, hosting Crediton United with the Washbrook Meadows kick-off being 3pm.
Mountbatten Park hosts the other game with Honiton Town entertaining table-topping Brixham and this game – a first Saturday home game of the season for the Hippos, also kicks off at 3pm.
The other two local sides in the SWPL Premier East are both away with Sidmouth looking to finally secure a first point of the season having suffered five straight defeats in August, visiting a Dartmouth team that is also without a win, but they have only played two games so far, drawing one and losing one. Axminster Town face the long trip down to Torpoint Athletic for a game between the second placed home side and the third placed Tigers.
In the Scott Richards Solicitors’ Devon League, the local action is at Acland Park, where Feniton, one of just three teams still to sport an unbeaten record in the division, entertain Clyst Valley. It’s fourth at home to ninth with kick-off at 3pm.
The Devon League suffered another loss in midweek with the news that Chudleigh Athletic have become the third team to drop out of the league since the 2021/22 fixtures were drawn up.
It means what was initially going to be a 28 game season with 15 teams is now down to 12 teams and so a 22-game campaign.
In the Joma Devon & Exeter League, the big game from an East Devon perspective is at Manstone Lane, Sidmouth where Sidmouth Town Reserves entertain Ottery St Mary Reserves (3pm) in a Premier Division meeting.
There’s also action at Tiger Way Axminster where there is a repeat of the Wednesday night meeting between the two clubs (the 1st teams met in a SWP League Premier East contest that the Tigers won 2-1).
Tomorrow’s game its Axminster Town Reserves against Elmore Reserves, with kick-off at 3pm.
Lyme Regis are the third of the Premier Division East Devon based clubs to be in action tomorrow when they entertain Dawlish United (3pm).
In Division One it’s Upottery versus Lympstone (3pm) and there’s an East Devon derby at Beer Albion where the Fishermen’s second team host Tipton St John (3pm).

The Cockles have named their XV for this opening game of a new league season and it is: Gareth Walker, Will Ridout, Fin Keywood, Jack Fahy, Connor O’Shaughnessy, Max Keen, James Harris, Dave Bargent, Henry Goldson, Jake Inglis, Nick Headley, George Mears, Lewis Geran, George Meadows, Matt Ryan.
Replacements: Jack Madge, Steve Pape, Tom Steer. Looking in more detail at the first Cockles team of the season, Will Ridout, Max Keen and Jake Inglis are all making ‘returns’ to the 1st XV having graced the side in the past while the player making his Cockles’ debut tomorrow is Fin Hewood.
Withycombe launch a new Devon & Cornwall Division campaign with a visit to Bude, but there is action at Raleigh Park where the Withy UInder-16s host Tor RFC Under-16s with kick-off in this one being 3.30pm.
