‘Give us a wave!’ – Ottery garden centre workers join forces for Hospiscare’s Twilight Walk

Garden centre workers from Ottery St Mary taking part in next month’s Hospiscare Twilight Walk hope the public will wave them on their way.

A group of around 30 workers are gearing up to take part in Twilight with a Twist, on Saturday, July 10, setting off from Otter Garden Centre.

Entry is still open for those wishing to take part in the annual event – now celebrating its 15th anniversary – with organised 13-mile and six-mile routes in Exmouth, or plot your own course near home.

Entry is £20 per person or £32 for two people, and includes a Twilight t-shirt, medal, and an invite to an after-party.

Funds raised will support terminally ill patients and their families with free care in Exeter, Mid and East Devon.

The Otter team, some in fancy dress, plans to walk its own route set out by garden centre workers Lauren Pearcy and Sally Bright.

The group will start at the garden centre, in Gosford Road, walk through Ottery, nearby villages and hamlets, and the Escot estate.

Some plan to tackle the full 13 miles, while others have signed up to walk six miles, with the whole group crossing the finish line at the garden centre.

The Team Otter walkers have set up a JustGiving page, accepting donations in aid of Hospiscare.

Lauren said: “Over the years Hospiscare has given support and help to so many of us, our friends and families as well as our wider local community.

“By taking part in this year’s walk, we are showing our personal appreciation for all the work the charity does.

“Some of us will be dressing up for the occasion, and we hope that anyone who sees us will give us a wave.”

Hospiscare is appealing for ‘as many people as possible’ to take part in this year’s event because the Covid-19 pandemic has ‘had a huge impact on the charity’s fundraising’.

Michael Maltby, CEO Jurassic Fibre, Twilight Walk sponsor, said: “Covid-19 has hit hard, but Hospiscare hasn’t stopped providing award-winning care to local people facing terminal illness.

“This is why we are honoured to be supporting Twilight Walk for its 15th anniversary year.

“I’m sure this year’s special event will be the perfect example of how people can come together to make a real difference in their local community.”
