Police issue warning after ‘builders’ calling at home in Exeter steal cash in distraction burglary

Police are urging caution in Exeter after cash and possessions were stolen during a distraction burglary at a home in St Thomas.

Officers said two men called at the property on Wednesday (June 2), offered to carry out building work, then one distracted the owner while the other searched the home.

Police are warning against allowing strangers into the home, and to only use trusted  tradespeople.

A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesperson said: “Residents are asked to exercise caution when opening the door to unexpected callers.

“Police received a report of distraction burglary in the St Thomas area of Exeter.

“Two unidentified male suspects call at a property on the pretence of offering to do building work.

“One male distracted the occupant whilst the other searched the home and took cash and other items.”

The police spokesperson added: “Always use builders from a trusted source.

“Do not allow strangers into your home, use the door chain if you have one, if callers persist, close door and call police.”
