East Devon: Man tries to swap £700 fake cash in Ottery supermarket, prompting police to urge vigilance

Police are warning shopkeepers and businesses in East Devon to be vigilant after a man tried to swap fake cash in Ottery St Mary, amounting to hundreds of pounds.

Devon and Cornwall Police received a report of a man attempting to swap £700 of fake Scottish notes for Sterling at Sainsbury’s, in Hind Street, Ottery, on Monday (May 24).

Police are urging anyone faced with a similar scam to call the police immediately on 999.

Officers are urging business and shop owners to be on their guard and tell their staff of the latest scam attempt.

A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesperson said: “We have received a report of a male suspect requesting to change fake Scottish notes for Sterling at a supermarket in East Devon on Monday 24 May 2021.

“Please be wary of this and inform staff.”
