Pupils at St Peter’s Primary School in Budleigh Salterton are hoping to make a big splash with their swimming pool fundraising campaign.
The youngsters and staff hope to raise £2,500 to pay for a new pool cover and winding mechanism to replace the current equipment, which is ‘on its last legs’.
Headteacher Steve Hitchcock said the pool was ‘invaluable’, giving all the pupils at least two terms of swimming a year.
He said: “This means the children don’t have to travel to Exmouth for swimming and miss out on valuable learning time.
“However, our pool is in desperate need of a new mechanism and cover.”
Mr Hitchcock said funding the pool’s ongoing maintenance had proved a problem during the Covid-19 pandemic because the school was not able to fully hire out the facility and generate an income for repairs
The school has set up an online fundraising page with a target of £2,500.
He said: “We are so incredibly lucky to be one of the only primary schools still to have its own swimming pool.
“We are able to provide all of the children in every year group at least two terms of swimming per year – which is invaluable.
“However, the pool is in need of constant maintenance and we have not been able to hire it out as much as usual this year due to the pandemic.
“This means we have a shortfall of income this year, and a big bill to pay.
“The swimming pool cover – needed to keep the pool insulated and warm enough for the children to swim – is on its last legs.
“The mechanism used to wind it back and forth has also broken. We need £2500 to replace them both.”
