Axminster firefighters have urged vigilance when lighting bonfires after the crew was called to tackle a blaze at the town’s old skate park.
The crew was called to a report of a fire on Sunday afternoon (April 11) and when they arrived, they found a lit bonfire left unattended.
Firefighters said care was needed when lighting bonfires – including notifying the fire service.
The crew said lit bonfires should be constantly monitored until extinguished.
An Axminster Fire Station spokesperson said: “We were called to reports of a fire in
the open at the old skate park site.
“Fortunately, on our arrival, we found a bonfire that had been left unattended.
“Crews then used one hose reel jet and a drag fork to turn over the bonfire and dampen it down to prevent any risk of fire spread.”
The spokesperson added: “Please remember that if you have a bonfire in this warm weather to stay with it until it is fully burnt out and always remember to have some form of firefighting media with you, to prevent unwanted fire spread.
“Also, if you are having a bonfire, please notify fire control before you light it so you don’t end up with a fire engine at your door.”
