Two men have been arrested on suspicion of assault and arson after an early-hours blaze near Exmouth town centre.
Police enquiries are continuing in Rolle Street after the blaze was thought to have been started deliberately.
Firefighters from the town were called to a property in Rolle Street at 3.50am on Tuesday (February 23), where they found a blaze in a sitting room on the second floor of a home.
Police called to the property found a man who was believed to have been assaulted.
He was taken to hospital by ambulance.
Police said enquiries were ongoing.
A Devon and Cornwall Police spokeswoman said: “Police were called to a property on Rolle Street, Exmouth shortly after 2.30am this morning following reports of an assault.
“On arrival officers located a man who was reported to have been assaulted and a fire within the property which is currently being treated as suspicious.
“The man was taken to hospital by ambulance.”
Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said the incident involved a blaze in the second-floor area of the building, approximately 4m by 8m, used as a domestic dwelling.
A fire service spokesperson said: “Crews extinguished the fire which was confined to the lounge area, using two breathing apparatus wearers, one hose reel jet and one safety jet.
“The cause of the fire was believed to be deliberate.
“Police were also in attendance.”
- Devon and Cornwall Police said two men from Exmouth, aged 28 and 33, have been arrested on suspicion of assault and arson. They both remain in police custody at this time.
