Road closures planned in Exeter city centre as ‘essential’ resurfacing takes place

Delays are expected in Exeter city centre later this month when Sidwell Street is closed to traffic for resurfacing.

Devon County Council is warning ‘essential’ resurfacing work will be carried out in two phases.

From Monday, February 15 until Friday, February 26, Sidwell Street will be totally closed to traffic.

From Monday, March 1 until Wednesday, March 3, Sidwell Street and Summerland Street will be closed overnight, between 7pm and 7am, for resurfacing to be completed.

Pedestrian access will not be impacted, the council said.

Temporary traffic lights, road closures and diversions have been planned at various times while the works take place.

A Devon County Council (DCC) spokesman said: “The scheme will be carried out in two phases, initially from Monday 15 February to Friday 26 February.

“During this period Sidwell Street will be closed twenty-four hours a day for drainage and resurfacing work.

“The road closure will affect Sidwell Street from the traffic lights at Summerland Street towards Cheeke Street.

“Pedestrian access will be maintained.”

The DCC spokesman added: “Temporary traffic lights will also be in place at the Summerland Street junction while work is carried out from 7.30am to 5pm, which may cause minor delays to traffic.

“From Monday 1 March to Wednesday 3 March, Sidwell Street and Summerland Street will be closed overnight, between 7pm and 7am, for resurfacing to be completed.

“Pedestrian access will be maintained for businesses and residential properties along the affected section.

“A signed diversion route will be in place for traffic.”
