Nine more Covid-related deaths recorded in East Devon and five in Exeter

A further nine Covid-related deaths have been recorded in East Devon – with five more in Exeter – according to the latest weekly figures.

The district’s seven-day tally was the highest in Devon and Cornwall for the third week running.

Office for National Statistics (ONS) data published on Tuesday, January 19, shows the overall toll across both counties has now crossed the 1,000 mark.

The figures relate to deaths which occurred in the week of January 2-8 and were registered up to January 16.

Five of the deaths recorded in East Devon were at hospital and four were in care homes.

Three of the fatalities in Exeter were in hospital and two were in care homes.

There were four deaths in Plymouth; two in both Torbay and Torridge; six in mid Devon; three in each of North Devon, the South Hams and Teignbridge; and one in West Devon.

Seven fatalities due to coronavirus were recorded in Cornwall.

The previous seven-day period saw 32 Covid-related deaths – nine of them in East Devon and two in Exeter – recorded across Devon and Cornwall.

In total, 133 Covid-19 deaths have now been registered in East Devon; 69 of them in hospital, 57 in care homes, five at home, and five ‘elsewhere’.

The total for Exeter is 78; 45 of them in hospital, 28 in care homes, four at home, and one ‘elsewhere’.

Some 1,009 coronavirus-related deaths have been registered across Devon and Cornwall; 600 in hospitals, 329 in care homes, 73 at home, one in a hospice and six ‘elsewhere’.

Of these, 143 have been in Plymouth; 111 in Torbay, 63 in Teignbridge, 59 in North Devon, 43 in Torridge, 54 in Mid Devon, 29 in West Devon, and 27 in the South Hams.

A total of 269 deaths due to the virus have been registered in Cornwall.

The ONS figures for Devon and Cornwall include people who have died at home, in hospital, in care homes, hospices, ‘other’ communal places, or ‘elsewhere’.

They are broken down by the local authority area in which the deaths were registered.

Government figures show at total of 3,347 Covid-19 cases have been confirmed in East Devon to date. The number for Exeter is 4,350.
