Ottery St Mary firefighters tackle car blaze in Whimple

Firefighters from Ottery St Mary tackled a car blaze in Whimple this morning (Sunday, January 3).

A crew was called to London Road at around 10.35am after the vehicle’s owner raised the alarm.

They donned breathing apparatus and used hydraulic and thermal imaging kit as well as compressed air foam and hose-reel jets to douse the flames.

The road was then reopened.

The car was 40 per cent damamged by fire and 100 per cent destroyed by smoke and water.

A Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Control received a call regarding a vehicle on fire from the owner.

“One fire engine from Ottery St Mary attended, on arrival the vehicle was well-alight with passengers free and clear of the vehicle.

“Crews got to work using small tools, two breathing apparatus, hydraulic spreaders, compressed air foam systems, a thermal imaging camera and hoses-reel jets.

“The vehicle has 40 per cent fire damage and 100 per cent smoke and water damage.

“Recovery of the vehicle has been arranged.”
