A driver had a ‘miraculous escape’ walking away from an overturned car with minor injuries after a crash in Exeter on Tuesday morning (November 3).
City fire crews from Danes Castle and Middlemoor, and the emergency services, were called to Matford, near the Devon Hotel, shortly before 10am to rescue a person trapped in an overturned car.
The driver was left with minor injuries and able to walk away from the crash scene with the help of paramedics.
The fire service warned motorists to take extra care when driving on wet roads covered with fallen leaves, and during times of low-lying sun.
A Danes Castle spokesman said: “Reports stated that a single vehicle had overturned and one person was trapped.
“The Devon Air Ambulance, South Western Ambulance Service and Devon and Cornwall Police were also dispatched.
“The first fire appliances arrived in just under eight minutes and stabilised the vehicle and made the scene safe.
“The driver thankfully had a miraculous escape and was able to walk away from the vehicle with the assistance of the paramedics.”
The spokesman added: “Please take extra care while driving when the roads are wet and covered in fallen leaves.
“Increase your distance from the vehicles in front, slow down and don’t forget your sun glasses while the sun is lower in the sky.”
Fire crews, along with the heavy rescue vehicle, were called to the Dawlish Road, at Matford, Exeter, at around 9.45am, after car left the road and overturned.
Road closures were put in place while the emergency services dealt with the crash and the highway was reopened at around 11.10am.
A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesperson said: “”We received reports of a road traffic collision on the Dawlish Road at Matford, Exeter, in which a vehicle was said to have left the highway and overturned, at around 9.45am.
“The fire service and ambulance service also attended the scene and road closures were put in place.
“The driver of the car is believed to have suffered minor injuries.”
