Ottery St Mary Football Club were 4-0 winners when they entertained Kingsteignton in a midweek Scott Richards Solicitors Devon League South and West fixture.
Pete Grover scored twice, his first to open the scoring came with a clinical finish after some neat approach play with Liam Carey, the latter back in action after an absence on holiday.
Grover’s second was also the fourth and final Otters goal and it came with the assist down to player-boss Billy Rouse, who delivered a telling set-piece into a busy area where Grover struck his sixth goal of the campaign.
In-between the two Grover goals there was one from Ottery captain Tiernan West, who headed home another delightful delivery from a set-piece by Rouse.
The other goal was a strike from Daniel Gills that was fumbled into the net by the visiting glovesman.
The win, a sixth in seven unbeaten games played out over just 25 September days, means the Otters end the first month of the new term sitting on top of the table.
Ottery boss Billy Rouse said: “We produced our best football of the season in the first half of this game.
“We were dominant and played some real scintillating stuff.
“If it wasn’t for some great goalkeeping and some ‘ordinary’, not to say ‘slack’ finishing, the scoreline would surely have been greater.
“Credit must go to Kingsteignton for they never gave in and finished the game strongly.
“I’m sure they’ll make it difficult for some sides this season.”
Not only does the win keep the Otters top of the table but it also means that this term’s team has already passed the points tally achieved by last season’s side.
On Saturday, October 3, the Otters travel to face Dartington & Totnes (3pm kick-off).
