East Devon has a number of top sporting offerings this Saturday (September 12) – with local football and cricket action among the highlights.
Top billing football-wise, arguably, goes to the FA Cup Preliminary Round tie being played at Southern Road where Exmouth Town take on Southern League outfit Melksham Town.
Exmouth Town FC’s Martin Cook says: “We are asking supporters to get to the game earlier than they normally would.
“The gates and the bar will open from 1pm and we shall be operating a track-and-trace system in line with the guidelines set down by the government and football authorities.”
He continued: “We are fortunate in that we have got a large number of volunteers on duty to help get supporters into the ground in time for kick-off, but it’s worth pointing out that, with a restricted capacity of 300, we are asking supporters to get here earlier than normal, if only to make certain they get in to the see the game.
“With a similar fixture in this competition last year, we were lucky enough to attract 400 people and, if we had the same demand for this game, then sadly 100 of those folk would not get in.”
Kick-off at Southern Road is 3pm.
There’s also football at Mountbatten Park, Honiton, with the Hippos entertaining an Ilfracombe side that followed last Saturday’s opening day 2-0 home win over Ivybridge Town with a similar success on Monday night at Crediton United.
Honiton Town AFC are also unbeaten in two early season league games after last Saturday’s 2-1 home win over Holsworthy and a midweek 2-2 draw at Cullompton Rangers. The action at Mountbatten Way begins at 3pm.
East Devon’s two other teams that play in the SWP League Premier East; Axminster Town AFC and Sidmouth Town AFC are both in away action at Torrington and Dartmouth respectively.
There’s Tolchards Devon Cricket League finals action at both Sidmouth and Sidbury cricket clubs.
The Fortfield home of Sidmouth stages the Premier final and it’s set to be a cracker of a fixture with Sidmouth going head-to-head with Heathcoat.
It’s a meeting between the two teams who have won the Tolchards Devon Cricket League top honour in each of the past two seasons.
Play gets underway at the Fortfield at 12.30pm.
That’s also the start time at the Millfield home of Sidbury Cricket Club as they seek to claim silverware for the second year in a row in terms of their Devon League standing.
Sidbury entertain Bridestowe II with the winners being crowned Devon league Tier Eight champions.[asp_product id=”17531”]
