A trio of East Devon teams were in action on day one of the 2020/21 South West Peninsula League Premier East campaign – with all of their futures finishing 2-1.
And it was a case of ‘two out of three’ for the district’s sides as there were victories for Honiton and Sidmouth but a defeat for Axminster.
Honiton Town FC scored one of the first goals of the new term with Ben Ede drilling home a penalty to put the Hippos a goal to the good against Holsworthy after just seven minutes.
Jack De Winton doubled the lead just before half-time and a second-half Holsworthy goal was not enough to leave the home side celebrating an opening day win.
It was a similar story at Manstone Lane where Sidmouth Town AFC got their league term off to a winning start.
Goals from Tom Diamond and Lukie White gave the Vikings a 2-1 home success over Plymouth Marjon.
However, Axminster Town AFC succumbed to a 2-1 Tiger Way defeat at the hands of Dartmouth.
All three East Devon-based teams are in action in the coming week.
Honiton Town kick things off on Tuesday night (September 8) when they make the short trip to Cullompton Rangers.
On Wednesday night (September 9), Sidmouth Town travel to Newton Abbot Spurs while Axminster Town are at home to Elmore.
In terms of the other opening day matches in the SWP League Premier East, the most stunning result was the 15-0 score line by which Torridgeside thrashed Stoke Gabriel.
There were home wins for Elmore, who beat Elburton Villa 4-0, for Ilfracombe Town, who beat Ivybridge Town 2-0 and Millbrook, who defeated Newton Spurs 2-1.
Torpoint won a seven goal thriller, beating hosts Torrington 4-3 and there were also away wins for Crediton United, 2-1 at Bovey Tracey and also Brixham, who won 3-1 at Cullompton Rangers.
