PHOTOS: Honiton and Axminster among Devon fire crews to tackle huge hay lorry blaze in Somerset

These photographs show the extent of a hay lorry blaze in Somerset that was yesterday afternoon (Wednesday, August 26) tackled by Devon firefighters from Axminster, Honiton and Exeter.

The Ilminster bypass was closed to traffic for several hours after an articulated lorry carrying 20-tonnes of hay caught fire.

Fire crews from Martock, Yeovil, Crewkerne, Chard, Honiton, Axminster, Danes Castle in Exeter, Somerton and Ilminster worked for around 12 hours to bring the blaze under control.

Crews used jets and drag forks as they worked to put out the fire as flames raged through tons of hay, and the vehicle.

The fire service said the lorry and hay were completely destroyed by the blaze.

The lorry was removed from the road by a recovery vehicle at around 2am, the incident was scaled down shortly after, and the fire service left the scene.
