Police shut down ‘unlicensed music event’ in village near Axminster

Police shut down an ‘unlicensed music event’ in Hawkchurch, near Axminster, and seized equipment in the early hours of this morning (Saturday, August 1).

Officers said they responded to complaints in the East Devon village yesterday evening but, despite speaking with organisers, could not stop the festivities.

They returned later and pulled the plug after the event was declared an ‘unlicensed gathering’.

A spokesperson for the Rural East Devon Police team said: “Police responded to complaints about an unlicensed music event at Hawkchurch, Axminster, on the evening of 31 July.

“Attempts to negotiate with organisers prior to and at the start of the event failed to prevent the music being halted and it was declared an unlicensed gathering under Section 63 of the Public Order Act.

“In the early hours of 1 August police units entered the site and seized the sound equipment, preventing the event from continuing.”
